Question: Is there anything i can do about an impending layoff?
(Posted by: JimboGreen on 2009-10-17 12:34:12)
I have a pretty good feeling a few people are out for me and they're setting me up to be laid off at work (assigning me difficult projects, trying to make me loose my motivation- - I work very hard, etc). Is there anything I can do to either head them off or get something good out of this before it actually happens? |

I have been in your exact position and ended up laid off. My advice to you is to start looking NOW while you have a job. The fact that you are looking while you have a job is a great edge: you are not a beggar you can be more confident and do not have to settle. Then even if you are laid off if you already have options(and it does not hurt to have options in any case) The worst position is to be unemployed and looking then you do feel like a beggar, and are apt to settle for much less, and unless you are good at lying you will have a hard time playing hardbal in negotiating pay. Besides which I have been in situations in which I was literally forced to take a horrible worst nightmare of a job in a oppressive highly dangerous sweatshop operation because they had Government contracts and were obviously paying somebody off for so many OSHA violations working downtown in a dangerous part of town, in a dirty hovel of a place that still had redbrick streets! from the 1900 "s I was slaving for ten hours with one twenty minute break for far less than I could afford to live on because the Employment agency that called me said clearly that they would turn anyone who refused a job offer to unemployement and I would loese my benefits. Thank God they also fell on hard times and I was laid off again after a week. Sometimes you can do nothing about what is coming: no matter how good a worker you are; You just have to keep your integrity and do not change who you are. I was in a good job I thought was free from threat because they were not involved with the auto industry, then they started sweeps of lay offs one day you are talking to a coworker and bam where did Robert go? sixty people gone; the next week; 30 more. I was moved from my plant to consolidate personnel I was in a new part of the company with a supervisor who did not know me, I never missed a day and did EVERYTHING perfectly. I was in charge of hundreds of thousands of dollars of material and was the one man in the entire company who was never written up for making a mistake. All the others had been many many times. Suddenly that was all erassed, The guys I worked with were threatened by me some of their friends had been taken in the layoffs and here I was from another plant taking their place. It became a competition. I ws there only two days when the supervisor comes up to me out of the blue and starts yelling at me that "All the Guys " in the shop said I was forcing my religion on them yelling at them and It had better stop immediately: He said he had heard alll sorts of bad things about me and that I had been a problem at my other shop and he would not tolerate it. I was stunned and flabbergasted; I HAD NOT SPOKEN TO ANYONE!!! I was there only two days How could I? The only conversation I had at all about religion was with the Guy who I was working with in my dept, He was talking about this Oprah Winfrey book of the month called; " The Secret " about things happening through belief or faith to which I merely agreed with him and said those things were not really a secret as all he was saying was in the Bible and it is two thousand years old. Hardly standing on a soap box condemming every soul to a fiery hell (That I make every effort to say I DO NOT believe in) never theless no matter the truth nor the fact that I had a spotless work record and this same guy told me how he purposely does less work and how he slacks off and was written up in front of me on my first day on the job and on the fourth day he was gone for two days(I never missed a day) I was gone in a week. But I trusted in God and He made a way where the way seemed impossible as he is well able to do! I prayed that day for a better job and I am now in said Job. God is magnificent; so keep your integrity and do not fear. |
